Academic City’s Presidential scholar attracts attention of Korean government

One of the outstanding examples of Academic City’s Presidential Scholarship is Louisa Ayamga, Class of 2024, who received the prestigious Global Korea Scholarship (GKS), a highly competitive programme supported by the Korean government. Louisa will soon be pursuing a Master’s degree in Computer Engineering with a focus on Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Healthcare in South Korea.

“I have always been passionate about tech-driven health solutions, especially within the African context. Academic City’s Presidential Scholarship lifted the financial burden off my shoulders and gave me the freedom to focus on building a strong academic and leadership foundation. It was life-changing,” she noted.

Louisa’s journey began at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Girls’ SHS, where she was a science student and a participant in the National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ). Her early introduction to innovation and competition ignited a hunger to explore how far curiosity and determination could take her.

After a recommendation from a mentor, she applied for the Academic City Presidential Scholarship. “The interview process was rigorous, but the moment I got that call, I knew my life had changed. At Academic City, I gained more than an education. I found a purpose, a community and a platform to become who I am today,” she narrated.

Academic City’s unique learning ecosystem played a pivotal role in shaping Louisa’s academic and professional pursuits. From classroom rigour to real-world projects, the university’s blend of innovation, entrepreneurship, and leadership development provided fertile ground for growth.

According to her, “The culture of excellence at Academic City made me resilient. The Friday leadership seminars, in particular, were a game-changer. Listening to seasoned professionals opened my eyes to the realities of leadership and ambition.”

Her fondest memories from her time at the university include late-night project work, robotics exhibitions during ministerial visits and friendly volleyball games with classmates. Those moments reminded her that learning goes beyond textbooks.

Now on the verge of beginning her postgraduate journey, Louisa is already building DataBridge, an initiative that aims to create a robust healthcare data ecosystem for Africa.

“Academic City encouraged us to start building solutions now, not later. That mindset of urgency and purpose is something I carry with me every day,” she said.

The Presidential Scholarship is part of Academic City’s broader mission to nurture Africa’s future-ready leaders. With success stories like Louisa’s, the scholarship scheme is not only attracting the best young minds but also drawing attention from potential investors, philanthropists, and international partners committed to expanding access to quality education in Africa.
